Training #2: Before and During the First Appearance Hearing

Thursday, July 11, 2024 • 01:00PM – 3:00PM EST

We are pleased to announce the 2nd part of our virtual training series hosted by Advancing Pretrial Policy Research (APPR)! Join us for the second session, Before and During the First Appearance Hearing, on Thursday, July 11, 2024, from 1PM to 3PM. The training will cover the role pretrial services may play before and during the first appearance hearing, how pretrial assessments and other information may be used to inform pretrial decisions, identify and describe legal principles underpinning a meaningful first appearance, and differences between court-ordered sanctions and voluntary services.

Training #3: Pretrial Supervision and Supportive Services

Thursday, September 19, 2024 • 01:00PM – 3:00PM EST

The training will review the evidence-based and practical ways pretrial services can promote people’s pretrial success. The methods discussed in the training honor the presumption of innocence, the requirement of “least restrictive means,” and the principle of human dignity. In doing so, the focus of supervision shifts from managing failure to promoting success. Faculty will cover in detail the research on pretrial strategies (such as court notification, supervision, and electronic monitoring). This training will also provide participants with evidence-based and practical ways to support people with need-based services, the frequency and intensity of contacts, and how to respond to compliant and noncompliant behavior.

Training #4: Measuring Performance

Thursday, November 7, 2024 • 01:00PM – 3:00PM EST

Performance measures enable justice agencies to understand and evaluate the extent to which important pretrial goals, such as fairness, effectiveness, and efficiency, are being achieved more objectively. Common pretrial performance measures include, for example, a jurisdiction’s release rate, arrest-free rate, and court appearance rate. The benefits of good performance measures include evaluating new practices’ effectiveness, tracking changes over time, and communicating with all stakeholders, including the public and media. This course is designed to assist participants with increasing their capacity to use local data to understand better and improve their pretrial system. The course will also cover the importance of quality assurance and strategies to build sustainability using continuous learning and onboarding new staff.
